Red Flags Resource Center

As a physician practice, you know that you are required to participate/comply with the Federal Trade Commission's “Red Flags” rule, which is part of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) Act of 2003.

This rule indicates that all creditors establish a program to prevent, detect, and manage identity theft within their business. And, as a business that offers services that are not ‘paid in full’ at the time of service, physician practices are considered creditors.

What does this mean to you? Well, fortunately the FTC recently delayed the enforcement of Red Flags until June 1, 2010. However, by that time all physician practices need to be in compliance with these rules which indicate proper protection for your patients from identity theft.

How We Help

The Medfusion patient-to-provider communication solution – our websites and portals – already have several features in place that will help you reach your Red Flags compliance goals. Read below for a more detailed explanation, and fill out the contact form below to learn more.

How the Medfusion Patient Portal helps prevent identity theft:

Medfusion solutions has built-in capabilities to prevent illegal use, including:

  • Authentication & login capabilities:
    • Multiple levels of security to create user IDs and passwords
    • Multiple levels of security to retrieve forgotten user IDs and passwords
    • A “lock out” function after repeated access failures
  • Encrypted Health information:
    • All personal health information is encrypted within the system
  • Audit trial for nearly every action executed on the portal by patient and practice staff
  • Highly secure network security infrastructure that follows national standard guidelines.

How the Medfusion Patient Portal helps detect identity theft:

Within the Medfusion portal solution, patient photos can be uploaded by patient or practice, and stored in their portal record. The practice can verify and approve any photos uploaded by patients to ensure proper identification, and then can use that photo at patient check-in to easily verify identity.

How the Medfusion Patient Portal helps act upon identity theft:

The Medfusion solution enables immediate deactivation of a patient record upon report of fraudulent use. If necessary, practices are also able to delete patient portal accounts if they are found to be fraudulent.
